There is no place like home or is there?
We are speaking at the New York State’s Leading Age New York’s Annual Conference in Saratoga Springs this year. Come visit us Wednesday, May 20th from 11:15 a.m. to 12: 45 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs City Center. The topic is Designing for Hospice Care and the Co-Presenter is Dr. Bernie Lee of MJHS in Brooklyn, New York. It is subtitled “No Place like Home?”
The hope is to inspire other non-profits to enter this much needed and expanding area, which runs the gamut from services in private homes to day care, residences, and inpatient settings. The other hope is to stimulate other design professionals to go beyond the traditional paradigms published in the design periodicals that all seem to feature one story sprawling hospice care on green suburban sites. We all have different images in our backgrounds and personal traditions of what home, comfort, and family mean. Architects, interior designers, and operators should not presume to impose one image of a single family home onto a group setting. There is so much more we can create.
These case studies take on urban sites with re-purposed spaces, imaginatively reconstructed within other uses. This has provided us with rare opportunities to make meaningful differences to families whose grief is unending and extends to pediatric residents with little time.
With our body of work in this area, we hope taken altogether, there will be a tangible step forward.
